How to Install a Telephone Connector to a Wire

A telephone connector is the plug on the end of a telephone wire that connects your telephone to a telephone outlet. Homeowners performing routine maintenance and repairs on their telephone systems will normally purchase telephone wire with the plugs already attached. However, you may need to fasten the plugs yourself when you want the telephone wire to be a nonstandard length.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim one end of the telephone cable at a right angle to ensure the interior wires are the same length. Carefully strip 1/4 inch of the outer insulating sheath from this end without cutting the interior wires.

    • 2

Inspect the inner wires. Your telephone line will have up to three pairs of wires inside the outer sheath. You will typically connect all of these wires to the plug, although most telephones and similar devices use only the innermost pair, which are red and green.

    • 3

Smooth out the wires to remove any kinks and ensure they don't cross or overlap each other. Separate the wires slightly so they'll slide into the plug more easily.

    • 4

Hold the telephone cable in one hand so the cut end is pointed toward you. Orient the cable so the inner red wire is on your left and the inner green wire is on your right. Hold the plug in your other hand so the front of the plug is facing away from you and the clip is on the bottom of the plug.

    • 5

Slide the individual telephone wires into their respective slots on the plug. Insert the wires into the plug as far as they'll go. Hold the cable in place and fit the plug into the matching space on your crimping tool. Crimp the plug by firmly squeezing the crimping tool handles together. Remove the plug from the crimping tool.
