How to Use Caulk When Installing a Pedestal Sink

Cameron Easey

You can add space to your bathroom and create a new design template by replacing a vanity sink with a pedestal sink. Installing a pedestal sink involves attaching the sink to the wall, then applying caulk to the gaps between surfaces.

Installing the Sink

  1. Remove the vanity and existing fixtures. You will first need to turn off the water by closing the valves, if any, that are under the sink.

  2. Disconnect the water supply lines to the sink, then remove the screws that were used to secure the vanity to the wall.

  3. Install the support bracket for the pedestal sink. Use a tape measure to determine how high up the wall to mount the bracket based on the directions that came with the sink. Use a level to make sure the bracket is plumb on the wall.

  4. Secure the support bracket to the wall using lag screws and a power drill.

  5. Attach the sink to the wall by sliding it over the support bracket. Connect the water supply to the sink using an adjustable wrench. Attach the drain to complete the installation of the sink unit.

  6. Place the pedestal in position under the sink. Use a power drill to secure a lag screw to the floor through the bottom of the pedestal.

Applying the Caulk

  1. Cut off the end of a tube of silicone caulk using a utility knife.

  2. Place the tube in a caulk gun, then run a bead of caulk around the back edge of the sink where it meets the wall.

  3. Apply another bead of caulk around the pedestal base where it meets the floor.

  4. Moisten your index finger and run it along the edge of the beads to even them out. Use a damp cloth to remove any excess caulk from the sink and flooring. Allow the caulk to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.
