How to Install a Backup Camera on a Nissan Frontier
Backing up a vehicle isn't a difficult task, but if you're driving a Nissan Frontier and you have a bed full of stuff, the job just got a lot tougher. Fortunately, installing a backup camera isn't a big deal and should only take an hour or so to do. In this case, the install is the Roadmaster VR3 backup camera system.
Things You'll Need
- Drill
- Drill bits
- Backup camera
- 12-volt test light
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Scotchlok connector
- Pliers
- Rubbing alcohol
- Towel
Instructions

1
Open the driver's door and sit in the seat. Locate a spot where you can mount the monitor for the system. It should be a flat surface, such as the dashboard.
-
2
Clean off the mounting surface using some rubbing alcohol and a rag. Then adhere the hook-and-loop sticker to the dashboard, pressing firmly.
-
-
3
Attach the monitor to the hook-and-loop sticker by pressing it down on the panel. This will put the two pieces together.
-
4
Run the provided cigarette lighter adapter to the cigarette lighter. Plug it in, and the power to the monitor is done.
-
5
Move to the license plate mount on the bumper and screw the camera lens down using a drill and the provided screws. There's a wire that runs out of the camera, so be sure to leave room for that to run.
-
6
Run the wire through one of the license plate light holes on either side of the bumper, and run it toward one of the taillights, securing the wire with zip ties along the way.
-
7
Unscrew one of the taillights using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Locate the bulb for the back-up lights.
-
8
Pull the parking brake, and turn the key to the "on" position. Put the truck in reverse. The vehicle is not started, so it should not move, but you can also put a block of wood behind a wheel if you're concerned.
-
9
Probe the two wires going into the reverse light bulb using the test light. When the test light illuminates, then you've found the positive wire.
-
10
Connect the red wire from the backup camera to the positive wire on the reverse light using a scotchlok connector. To do this, place the reverse light positive wire in the connector, push the red wire into it as well, and clamp down the metal bar in the middle of the connector using a pair of pliers. Then pull the tab of the scotchlok connector over the metal piece.
-
11
Repeat step 10 for the other wire going to the reverse bulb, the negative wire, and the black wire off the backup camera.
-
12
Turn on the car and put it into reverse. The camera should now activate and the monitor should turn on. If it doesn't, check all of your connections again.
