Spyware and adware affect many PCs every year. Despite Microsoft's constant security updates to its operating systems, the problem continues to grow rather than decrease. Anti-spyware/adware programs--such as Spybot Search & Destroy--seek to make the removal of spyware quick and easy. Unfortunately, some pieces of spyware are a little bit trickier to delete within Spybot. Luckily, deleting Spybot Search & Destroy problems is not only possible, but easy if you follow the correct steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Reboot your computer by going to Start > Shut Down > Restart.

  2. Step 2

Boot your computer into "Safe Mode" by pressing the "F8" key repeatedly at the first screen after rebooting. Then select "Safe Mode" from the "Boot Options" menu. Log on as yourself.

Do not log on as the Administrator Account in Safe Mode in XP. This is a default account that comes with every installation of XP and will not affect the spyware problems on your PC. Always log on as your user account as it is necessary to delete these problems.

  3. Step 3

Open Spybot by going to Start > Programs > Spybot Search & Destroy. Click "Update" to update the definitions so that spyware is thoroughly found and removed on your PC.

  4. Step 4

Click "Check for Problems" to begin the scan for spyware problems on your PC. The scan process will be much faster and more thorough because you are running your PC in Safe Mode.

  5. Step 5

Click "Fix Selected Problems." Spybot will begin deleting the problems it found on your PC and should be able to remove them all because the PC is in "Safe Mode." If any cannot be removed, repeat Step 5 and Step 6 again.

  6. Step 6

Click Start > Shutdown > Restart after Spybot has finished deleting the problems it found. You have now deleted Spybot Search & Destroy problems.
