How to Operate a Light Timer

Timers are rated based on the electrical load they will carry. Lamp timers carry the least load in comparison to say a heavy-duty grounded timer that you'd use for a heater. So you can use almost any timer for a lamp, but not the other way around. If you want to time your refridgerator---say at night---check the load it can carry carefully to avoid any overheating.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set the program. Insert the on and off trippers into the dial slots at the required time. The on tripper is usually green, and the off tripper is usually red. They slide in between the ring with the hours labeled on it and the ratchet-type ring. The little plastic trip device points outwards. It looks almost like a foot.

  2. Step 2

Push the trippers down firmly against the dial.

  3. Step 3

Set the time. Turn the dial clockwise, and get the arrow to point to the correct time in the center of the dial. The dark area represents PM---think night. The light area represents AM---think daytime.

  4. Step 4

Use the on/off override wheel at the top of the timer to switch the lamp on or off.

Tips & Warnings
  • Switch the variable on/off switch at the side of the timer if your timer has a variable on/off security feature. On varies the timer's on times and is good for use if you are out of town and want the house to have a lived-in look. Off is standard operation.
