How to Use an IP to Find Someone
If you know the IP address of an individual's computer or website, you can use free online tools to find the person's general location. Sites like Geobytes and IP-adress trace an IP address back to its origin and acquire a variety of information concerning the site or computer, including geographic location.

Using Geobytes

Go to the Geobytes homepage (see Resources) in any standard web browser.

Click on the "IP Address Locator" link in the menu on the left side of the window. Information about your current IP address will be displayed on the next page.

Type the IP address you want to look up in the "IP Address to Locate" field. Make sure the segments of the IP address are separated by periods.

Click on the "Submit" button to begin running a trace on the IP address you entered.

Scroll down on the results page to view the region and city where the IP address is located.

Go to the bottom of the page to see a map of the estimated location of the IP address.

Go to the IP-adress homepage (see Resources) in any standard web browser.

Click on the "IP Tracing" link at the very bottom of the window. A screen with various information concerning your current IP address will appear.

Enter the IP address you want to look up in the text field at the top of the window. Make sure the segments of the IP address are separated by periods.

Click on the "Track IP, host or website" button to begin locating the IP address.

Click on the pin in the map on the right side of the page to view the estimated location of the IP address. The map will detail city and country information.
