Mardi Gras doubloons are keepsakes that are tossed from floats by the various krewes and mystic societies during the annual New Orleans festival. Each doubloon features the sign of the krewe and the year in which it was distributed. Doubloons are minted in lightweight aluminum or plastic. Collectors gather doubloons to complete sets or to follow the annual exploits of a specific krewe. During the flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina, many doubloons were damaged or destroyed. Damaged doubloons can be restored using normal household cleansers.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mardi Gras doubloons
  • Lemon juice
  • Pine-Sol
  • Water
  • Two pails
  • Soft toothbrush
  • Soft dry towel
  1. Step 1

Place all metal doubloons in a single pail. Stand them on end to clean as much of the surfaces as possible.

  2. Step 2

Put plastic doubloons in a second pail. The chemicals used in the cleansers do not work well on both types of doubloons, so they must be separated.

  3. Step 3

Pour lemon juice in the first pail and Pine-Sol in the second. Use just enough of each to cover the tops of the coins.

  4. Step 4

Add an equal amount of water to the Pine-Sol solution. Pine-Sol needs to be diluted or it may melt your doubloons.

  5. Step 5

Wait at least two hours for the solutions to take effect. It is usually safe to leave the doubloons overnight, but smaller doubloons should be pulled out after a few hours.

  6. Step 6

Scrub the doubloons with a soft toothbrush to remove remaining debris. Do not use a hard toothbrush as the bristles may scratch the doubloon.

  7. Step 7

Rinse and dry the doubloons. They should now shine with their original brilliance, despite any water or dirt damage that occurred from the flooding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Inspect your small, plastic doubloons for discoloration or holes. If the Pine-Sol solution gets inside the doubloon, it will weaken the plastic. These types of doubloons may soak for up to 10 minutes, but may be better off discarded.
