How to Make a Square Fence Corner
Fences can make a yard look fantastic when done properly. However, if care isn't taken to be sure that the fence is level and square, it won't look good at all. A framing square is typically the first thing people use to ensure something turns out square. This isn't the best solution for a fence corner though. Lumber can warp and the cuts aren't always straight, so the better option is to use geometry to guarantee a 90-degree angle. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Determine where your fence will be located. With a rubber mallet, pound stakes starting at the corners where the fence posts holes need to be dug.
-
2
Tie a string to the stake at your starting point and stretch it out roughly perpendicular to the direction from which you are working. This would be the house for a residential property fence and your starting point stake would be in the ground right next to the house. Use the tape measure to mark the string at four feet from the stake.

3
Measure three feet from the stake parallel to the starting point and make another mark. For the residential property example, this mark would be on the house.
-
4
Take the tape measure with one end on the three-foot mark and hold it out diagonally towards the string. As soon as the five-foot mark on the tape measure meets the four-foot mark on the string, tie the string to a stake. Verify that the two marks still meet after the stake is in the ground. This string marks the line for the fence to come out at a 90-degree angle.
