Instructions

  • Caulking
  • Putty knife
  • Roller brushes

  • Clear glaze
  • Wallpaper liner

    Painting the Paneling

  1. Step 1

Prep the panel surface before applying treatments such as paint. Begin by applying degreasing solution. Follow with a coat of gloss remover. Do not apply is to large areas. Instead, focus on one small section at a time and run in the direction of the wood grain. Give the gloss remover approximately 30 minutes to set.

  2. Step 2

Do not remove the gloss remover. Apply primer to the baseboard and frame. You may need to apply additional coats of gloss remover and primer until the paneling is no longer visible.

  3. Step 3

Allow the paneling to dry over night.

  4. Step 4

Fill in any ridges and grooves in the paneling with caulking. Caulking typically comes in a tube; squeeze the trigger to dispense caulking from the nozzle. Use a putty knife to remove any excess chunks. Allow the caulking to dry over night.

  5. Step 5

Use a rolling brush to apply one coat of paint. Allow this coat to dry according to the paint manufacturer's instructions before applying additional coats. It is a good idea to let the paint dry overnight before proceeding with additional treatments.

  6. Step 6

Feel free to apply a coat of clear glaze to the dry paint to make the surface glossy and shiny. Remove excess glaze by wiping the paneling with a clean rag in the direction of the wood grain.

  7. Covering the Paneling

  8. Step 1

Follow steps one to four of the previous method to prep the paneling surface.

  9. Step 2

Apply wallpaper liner to the paneling to ensure that you have a smooth surface for applying the wallpaper.

  10. Step 3

Follow the manufacturer's instructions and apply wallpaper in the desired color and pattern on top of the liner. Some wallpapers liners allow you to paint the liner. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying paint to the liner if this is the method you have chosen.
