How to Obtain a Rabies Exemption in Pennsylvania

Animal vaccinations can be dangerous for your pets. Vaccines can sometimes invoke life threatening illness or cause your dog or cat to have a reaction so violent that your pet could die. In some cases, adverse reactions to vaccines are grounds for exemption from the vaccination requirements in most states. You can apply for an exemption to the Pennsylvania vaccination law.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your vet and ask if they are willing to sign the rabies exemption form if you are concerned about your pet's health.

    • 2

Obtain all of your pet's health records. Any illness or reaction your pets has had to the rabies vaccine must be completely and accurately documented. Other allergies and long-term conditions also need to be documented.

    • 3

Obtain the Rabies Exemption form from your local Animal and Public Health Department office. The form is not available online and varies slightly from county to county within Pennsylvania.

    • 4

Take the form to the vet to sign and then return it to the appropriate address to be filed with your pet's license and other vaccine information.

    • 5

Keep the paperwork associated with the exemption so that if there is ever a question regarding your pet's vaccination records, you can quickly and easily answer it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most veterinarians will grant the exemption without too much of a fight, however if yours will not, contact the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for more information.
