Instructions

    • 1

Hold your guinea pig at chest level with one hand, making sure that his or her back is gently pressed against you. Cup your palm around their abdomen so that the ends of your fingers are slightly touching your body.

    • 2

Make sure that the top of your hand rests snugly underneath the elbow joint of your guinea pig's front legs, preventing them from bringing their front legs inward.

    • 3

Hold one of the front paws out to your friend, with one of the pads of your fingers resting against the pad of your guinea pig's paw. Place the pad of your finger in such a manner that encourages the guinea pig's fingers to splay. Rest your thumb against the top of their leg to keep them from kicking away.

    • 4

Have your friend trim your guinea pig's nails up to about a centimeter or two before the quick, or pink of the nail. In guinea pigs whose nails are more darkly colored, this color may appear darker brown instead of pink.

    • 5

Place the pad of your finger underneath your guinea pig's other front paw, encouraging the guinea pig's fingers to splay. Gently hold their other front leg with your thumb while your friend trims the nails of their other paw.

    • 6

Hold one of your guinea pig's rear legs out to your friend, gently holding the ankle between your finger and thumb to prevent your guinea pig from kicking their leg back.

    • 7

Hold your guinea pig's other rear leg out, and repeat the same process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try not to cup your guinea pig's bottom with your hand, if you can. Being held to your body with only one hand tends to keep most guinea pigs from actively trying to escape, making the process of trimming their nails much easier.

  • If your friend cuts too close to the quick of the nail, it can begin to bleed.
