A confetti log cabin quilt is a design based on the traditional log cabin squares. Instead of the usual dark and light strips the block is made of light strips and scrappy squares sewn into the dark strips. Depending on your fabric selection this quilt can look country, juvenile, or modern and bright. The quilt looks complicated, but is easy enough for a relative beginner to create.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dark fabric in a variety of colors and prints
  • Light fabric
  • Scissors or rotary cutter, mat and ruler
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  1. Step 1

Cut all of your dark fabric into 2 1/2-inch squares. Cut your light fabrics into strips 2 1/2 inches wide. Cut the center squares of the quilt blocks from a light fabric, making them 4 1/2 inches square.

  2. Step 2

Sew together two random dark squares, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. This will create a rectangle 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches. Sew this rectangle onto one edge of the center square. This will be called side one.

  3. Step 3

Sew three random 2 1/2-inch squares into a strip. Place the previously sewn center square piece so that side one is at the bottom. Sew the strip of three squares onto the left-hand edge of the previously sewn square. This will be side two.

  4. Step 4

Lay out this sewn piece so that side one is at the bottom. Side three will be at the top. Sew a strip of light-colored fabric to side three, cutting the strip to the length of the side. The final side will be side four, and has another light strip sewn the same way as side three.

  5. Step 5

Sew four random 2 1/2-inch squares to make the next row, and sew it onto side one. Sew together five of the same squares to attach to side two. Sides three and four are finished with light-colored strips. This completes one 12 1/2-inch rainbow log cabin block.

  6. Step 6

Lay out the blocks alternating with side one at the bottom of one block, and then side one at the top of the next block. This will create a quilt top with a light-colored background and a multicolored rainbow stripe effect running diagonally across the quilt top.

Tips & Warnings
  • A very modern look can be created by using solid neon colors for the random scrappy squares.
  • Be careful to lay out the blocks in the correct order, or the larger pattern won't appear.
