How to Get Internet Access Without a Phone Line

When high-speed Internet access was first introduced, one of the requirements to obtain service was that you had to have an active telephone line. People who use their cell phones as their only telephone lines likely switched to cable Internet services through a local cable company, since it does not require a phone line. In order to compete with cable companies, many local telephone companies and Internet service providers now provide Internet access without requiring a phone line. This service is referred to as "Direct," Naked," and "Dry Loop" DSL.

Instructions

Contact your local telephone company to ask if it offers Direct, Naked, or Dry Loop DSL. All of the services are the same. Different phone companies may use different names to refer to the service.

Subscribe to the high-speed package that is right for you. The main difference in the packages will be the download speeds and upload speeds. The higher the speeds, the more expensive the package.

    • 3

Wait for your high-speed modem to arrive. The modem will be shipped out once you have subscribed with an Internet service provider (ISP). Some providers will charge you for the modem; others will not. Pricing of the modem and payment options will vary by ISP. Note that this kind of service may actually end up costing the same as or more than a standard DSL-landline bundle.

Connect your high-speed modem to your computer by using the cables that came with the modem. This is generally done by connecting the telephone cable from the modem to your telephone jack. Then connect the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of your cable modem to the Ethernet port of your computer.

Power on your high-speed modem and computer. If software came with your modem, insert the software into the CD-ROM drive of your computer so that it can complete the installation process. If the modem came without software, simply wait for all of lights on your computer to sync up. After that takes place, open your Web browser to begin browsing the Internet.
