How to Unstick Deadbolt Locks

Preventative maintenance on your deadbolt locks is necessary to keep them operating smoothly, but what happens when you neglect this task and the deadbolt lock becomes stuck? First, check to be sure no polish or foreign objects are causing an obstruction. If the deadbolt locking mechanism is clear of obstruction, and the key still will not turn, then it is stuck and a form of maintenance will need to be performed in order to unstick the lock and make it operable again. Things You'll Need

  • Deadbolt
  • Key
  • Penetrating oil (such as WD-40, Liquid Wrench)
  • Coffee stirrer (if the penetrating oil comes without a straw)

Instructions

    • 1

      Attach the straw or coffee stirrer into the nozzle of the oil.

    • 2

      Spray the penetrating oil directly into the locking mechanism.

    • 3

      Insert the key into the lock.

    • 4

      Turn the key back and forth, locking and unlocking the deadbolt to work the penetrating oil further into the lock.

    • 5

      Remove the key, close the door, and try to lock and unlock the door.
