How to Compare Tires
If you own a car, you should know about the importance of good tires. Not only do they add to the feel and performance of the vehicle, but they are necessary for safety. Like any other product, buyers must do their research to understand how to compare brands and sizes. While there is generally a trade off between price and quality, there are some bargains buys. 1
Compare tread-wear ratings. This provides an estimate for how long the tire will last. You can find the rating on the inside of the tire. Look for a rating of at least 400.
-
2
Compare how well the tires stop, also known as the traction score. Scores of AA or A are the best for safety.
-
-
3
Compare special features such as ply material, temperature control or other attributes that make the tire last longer and safer.
-
4
Compare speed ratings. Most passenger tires have a speed rating of S (112 mph) or H (130 mph). High performance cars can have a rating of Z (149 mph).

5
Research consumer reviews online. Once you've narrowed down your choice, compare brand names against consumer online reports. This will also help to identify recalled tires. The Office of Defects Investigation has a website specifically dedicated to tire recalls.
