If you've never made your own candles--or even if you have--consider learning how to make soy aromatherapy candles. Soy aromatherapy candles make great gifts for friends and family. The candles require only a few ingredients, and you can make them in less than two hours. A wide selection of essential oils and fragrances are available for you to create your own candle scents. Once you research and decide on a fragrance, color and container, you can get started making your own soy candles immediately.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 18 oz. soy wax flakes
  • 22 oz. glass jar
  • Thermometer
  • 1 oz. fragrance or essential oil
  • Stir stick
  • 18 oz. glass jar
  • 2 cotton wicks
  • Hot glue gun
  • Liquid dye
  • Ruler
  1. Step 1

Place the soy wax flakes in the 22-ounce glass jar. Set the glass jar in the microwave on the high setting. Heat the wax flakes for three minutes or until all the soy wax flakes melt completely.

  2. Step 2

Remove the jar from the microwave carefully. Allow the jar to cool for 10 minutes. Let the temperature drop to 160 degrees before continuing to make the soy aromatherapy candles.

  3. Step 3

Add the fragrance or essential oil to the candle wax to make an aromatherapy candle. Add your favorite fragrance, or mix and match fragrance and essential oils to create your own scent.

  4. Step 4

Stir the wax with a stir stick. Allow the wax temperature to cool to 110 degrees. Add the wicks to the 18-ounce candle jar while the wax is cooling.

  5. Step 5

Use the hot glue gun to affix the wicks. Place glue on the bottom of both of the cotton wicks. Insert the wicks inside the 18-ounce glass jar approximately one inch apart.

  6. Step 6

Add the liquid dye to the candle wax. Slowly add one drop at a time. Continue to stir the wax with each drop until the liquid dye distributes evenly in the wax.

  7. Step 7

Warm the candle jar to allow the wax to adhere. Run hot water on the outside of the jar for five minutes.

  8. Step 8

Pour the soy candle wax mixture slowly into the 18-ounce glass jar. Fill the jar completely with the wax. Hold the wicks straight up to keep them from falling into the wax. Use a ruler to center the wicks if they dislodge.

  9. Step 9

Allow the wax to cool for one hour. Trim the wicks to about one-fourth of an inch. Let the candle cure for 24 to 48 hours before lighting the soy aromatherapy candle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Design labels with your home computer to place on the candles.
  • Use caution while the wax is still hot, especially when removing it from the microwave.
