Things You'll Need:
- Leather repair kit
- Soft clean cloth
- Leather cleaning solution
- Rubbing alcohol
- Cotton ball
- Scissors
- Leather protectant
- Leather sandpaper
-
Step 1
Fix the scratches in standard leather couches by thoroughly cleaning the area to be repaired. Use a standard leather repair kit (See Tips.), or dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and lightly rub the area. Prior to using any solution on your leather sofa, try using it on an unnoticeable area first to see if it damages or removes the leather color.
-
Step 2
Trim any white "fluff" from the scratched area with scissors. The scratch may have pulled out some of the fiber or filling from inside of the leather sofa. Removing this filling will allow you to smooth out the area and blend in the repairs more seamlessly.
-
Step 3
Glue down flaps or lifted pieces of leather with lether glue. Give the leather glue at least one hour to completely dry.
-
Step 4
Sand and lightly smooth down the area that you glued as well as any rough spots around the scratches. Use standpaper with a very fine texture. Standard leather repair kits will contain leather sandpaper. Repeat the glue process if necessary to achieve a smooth sanded surface.
-
Step 5
Fill the cracks and deeper scratches with leather filler. Leather filler should be part of your leather kit. Use your finger to apply the filler. Smooth the filler into the dent or gouge. Allow the filler to dry, and sand until the area is smooth.
-
Step 6
Take the scratch repair lotion from your leather repair kit. Lightly smooth the scratch repair solution over the scratch with the repair cloth from the kit. Allow the solution to dry overnight.
-
Step 7
Apply leather cleaner and protector over the repaired area. This process will clean, repair and seal the scratched area of your leather furniture.
-
Step 1
Repair holes in your leather sofa using a leather repair kit. (See Tips.) If your sofa is an unusual color, purchase the more expensive repair kit as it will have more fabric coloring options.
-
Step 2
Trim off any white "fluff" or filling that is coming out of the area to be repaired. This is merely the backing or fill used for your leather sofa. It is best to remove this from the area to be repaired so the final repair will look smooth and even.
-
Step 3
Use the sandpaper from your repair kit to rough up the area around the hole. You will be placing a leather patch over the hole, and roughing up the area will make the patch hold in place more securely.
-
Step 4
Clean the damaged area of your furniture with leather cleaner or rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. This will remove any dirt, grime or leather protectant that has built up. Cleaning the leather around the hole will allow the patch to adhere better to the leather on your sofa.
-
Step 5
Select a patch to place over the hole. Trim the patch to fit the tear with at least 1/2 inch of patch material overlapping the tear.
-
Step 6
Take the leather adhesive from the repair kit, and glue the patch in place. Make sure the entire hole is covered. Allow the glue to dry a few hours before applying the color treatment. Lightly sand the area to smooth down any glue spots or rough edges.
-
Step 7
Fill any gouges or cracked areas with the leather filler from your repair kit. Allow the filler to dry for a few hours, and sand the area again.
-
Step 8
Use the dye in your leather kit to match a color to your leather sofa. Apply color you have selected to the patched area of your sofa. Allow the color application to dry. Lightly sand to remove any rough edges and to smooth the color.
-
Step 9
Rub the repair compound from your leather kit into the patched area of your leather sofa. Let the repaired area dry for a few hours, and the repair will be complete.
