How to Easily Clean a Futon Mattress

These are not only an inexpensive alternative to traditional mattresses but ideal for single rooms homes that are too small for both a bed and sofa. They are fun to have in any room but require maintenance that is simpler and quicker than you may think!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old, clean washcloth
  • Small spray bottle
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Water
  • Liquid household cleaner or bleach
  1. Step 1

    Mix a solution of diluted liquid detergent nearby in a spray bottle. Two-thirds of detergent to one-third of warm water is best. For dark colored mattresses, use cool water and mild liquid detergent.

  2. Step 2

    Using an old, clean washcloth (or any cloth that is lint-free), spray with solution until damp. If cloth is sudsy, then rinse with cool water until suds have partially disappeared.

  3. Step 3

    Wipe across entire top of futon mattress and let air dry for at least 30 minutes.If there is a soapy residue, then wipe up immediate with a clean, damp cloth by adding quick pressure to area.

  4. Step 4

    If you don't care to clean by hand, then invest in a futon slip cover that can be professionally cleaned or is machine washable.

Tips & Warnings
  • For white or light colored mattresses, a drop of bleach may be added to your solution or a heavy-duty, household cleaner may be used instead
  • Clean spills immediately to prevent permanent stains.
  • Odor eliminating air fresheners may be used sparingly
