A catering truck business can be a great way to break into the restaurant or food service business, or it can be a legitimate business model all on its own. While this kind of business is not easy to start (it will require hard work) it is relatively simple to start, which makes it an appealing business for many.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Get permits and licenses.

Starting a catering truck business will require you to obtain all the usual local business licenses, but you will need to make sure you meet the requirements of a food business as well. The requirements will differ according to location but this usually involved working with the department of health.

  2. Step 2

Obtain a catering truck or other vehicle.

Your business will be run out of this truck rather than a storefront or other retail location so the selection and purchase of a catering truck is an important step. You can buy a truck that is already designed to be a catering truck or you can retrofit a truck for this purpose. The most economical way to go about this is to look for a used catering truck rather than buying new.

  3. Step 3

    Plan a menu.

A catering truck menu should be very simple and straightforward. You are working with customers who are usually on their lunch hour and have a limited amount of time. They want tasty food and they want it quick so keep these requirements in mind. Once you have opened for business you can modify your menu based on customer preferences.

  4. Step 4

    Find locations.

Location, location, location isn’t just true in real estate, it’s important for a catering truck business as well. You need a location where there is lots of foot traffic and you need to be able to be at that location during the breakfast and lunch hours, when people are hungry. Spending the time for find good locations for your business might be the most important step you take in determining the success of your business.
