Step 1
Obtain a copy of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). You'll need to have a basic knowledge of this standard book to prepare for PMP certification. It's available in hard copy and as a file that you can download from various sources, including at a discount to PMI members. It's not necessary to be a member of PMI (Project Management Institute) to receive PMP certification from the organization, but membership can give you several useful discounts and access to information online to help you prepare for the PMP exam.
-
Step 2
Ask your employer if he or she will pay for online training for the PMP exam. Take advantage of any free courses that are offered.
-
Step 3
If you need to pay for training yourself, study the PMBOK and look for helpful free online study guides. You can find free sample PMP exam questions from several sources online by searching for "free sample PMP exam." Try the practice questions to identify your strong and weak spots.
-
Step 4
If the free sample PMP exams show you need further training, consider taking an online PMP training course. There are many options, depending on your budget, learning style and the help you need.
-
Step 5
Take more sample PMP exams online as you study more, and you can observe your improvement. Besides the free PMP sample exams, you can purchase other sample PMP exams online, or they may be included with an online PMP training course. When you're scoring well on the sample PMP exams, you know you can face the actual PMP exam with confidence.
