Step 1
DECORATE your house using traditional Halloween decorations. In our old neighborhood, one house was so scary the kids had to close their eyes when we drove by!
-
Step 2
BUY costumes that celebrate Halloween rather than scare children. I cringe at the masks and costumes with blood and gore. Help your child to make their own costume.
-
Step 3
CALL your local church and find out what fall festivities are available to small children. At our old church, we had games, rides and music. Children were still able to get candy.
-
Step 4
VISIT houses where you know the owners and avoid strangers. What other day of the year do we encourage our children to take candy from strangers?
-
Step 5
USE the Halloween holiday to celebrate the changing of the seasons. Halloween means different things to different people. You can take the fright out of Halloween by showing your children how the leaves changes in the Fall.
-
Step 6
RESOLVE that you will not allow the scary part of Halloween to define how your children celebrate.
