How to Relieve Rhinitis

Rhinitis refers to inflammation is the nasal passageway, and symptoms can include a runny nose, congestion, sore throat and sneezing. Several factors contribute to rhinitis, such as exposure to an allergen. But whether you suffer from allergic or non-allergic rhinitis, there are multiple ways to treat and relieve symptoms.

      Control symptoms with medication. Drugs such as decongestants and antihistamines provide quick relief for rhinitis. Decongestants thin mucus in the body and relieves nasal and chest congestion, while antihistamines treat allergies or reduce allergic reactions. Take medications as instructed.

      Consider an allergy shot. If allergic rhinitis doesn't improve with over-the-counter drugs, talk to your doctor about allergy shots to decrease your sensitivity to certain allergens and relieve rhinitis.

      Keep your windows closed. Outdoor allergens such as grass and pollen can enter the home through open doors and windows. Remain indoors when possible, and keeps your doors and windows closed.

      Use an air purifier. Eliminate or reduce indoor allergens to alleviate symptoms of rhinitis. Purchase an air purifier and position the device in your bedroom.

      Place dust covers on your mattress and pillows. Minimize symptoms of rhinitis by covering your bed and pillows with a plastic or cloth dust mite cover and by washing your bedding once a week.
