A shiny, new gym floor easily loses its luster when black marks mar the otherwise pristine surface. The rubber soles on tennis shoes can react with the highly-polished finish on wood flooring and create ugly black marks on the gym floor. Since tennis shoes are required for most gym-based sports, the problem is ongoing. Removing black marks off a gym floor is a simple process that almost anyone can manage.
Things You'll Need
- Dust mop
- Tennis ball
- Broom handle
- Duct tape
- Mineral spirits
Sweep the gym floor with a dry dust mop to remove dirt and debris.
Cut a tennis ball in half and attach it to the end of a broom handle with duct tape.
Dampen the tennis ball with mineral spirits.
Rub the tennis ball on the black marks until you have removed them from the floor.
Tips & Warnings
- If you do not have a tennis ball or broom handle, you can buff the floor by hand using a soft cloth. For more stubborn marks or stains, use a commercial cleaner specifically designed for gym flooring. If you know the original manufacturer of the gym flooring, check the manufacturer's website for recommendations for regular cleaning and stain removal.
- Do not use normal household cleaners on the gym floor, or you may damage the finish.
