How to Replace the Power Window Motor for a 1997 Ford Taurus
The 1997 Ford Taurus was manufactured with a power window regulator, which moves the glass with a small electric motor. This motor can wear out and fail. The average backyard mechanic can replace it in about 30 minutes.
Instructions

1
Disconnect the battery on your Taurus by turning the positive terminal bolt in a counterclockwise direction, then placing the open terminal aside. Do not let it touch metal.
-
2
Remove the door panel by turning the screw on the inside of the interior door handle counterclockwise, then removing the screw in the triangular inset just ahead of the door handle. Turn the door lock screw counterclockwise and remove it. Pull the door panel free of the pop rivets that hold it to the metal, starting at the corner and firmly tugging at the open section of the panel until the unit is free. Set the panel aside, away from the work area.

3
Unplug the power window motor from the wiring harness adapter by pulling the plug apart after releasing its catch with a screwdriver.
-
4
Remove the motor's mount bolts that hold it to the window regulator by turning them counterclockwise. The gears behind the motor are meshed into the regulator but will disengage if pulled directly out.
-
5
Replace the motor with a new unit by pressing it into the gears, then turning the mount bolts clockwise. Make sure to match the gears up to each other as you mount the motor.
-
6
Reattach the wiring harness by pushing the plugs together until you hear a snap.
-
7
Replace the door panel by pressing it firmly into the pop rivets, making certain that each one catches the door metal at the proper hole. When the panel is in place, secure it with the mounting screws (door handle and triangular section) by turning them clockwise. Replace the door lock toggle and turn it clockwise.
-
8
Reconnect the battery terminal by turning the bolt into the battery's positive adapter in a clockwise direction. The metal is soft, so do not over-tighten the bolt.

So what does it mean when the power window motor will go down but not up? I took the motor out and tested it without it being attached to the regulator. It will turn tu put the window down but not up. Does this mean I need a new motor, or would it indicate a wiring issue?
