How to Rip DVD Movies on Windows Vista
When someone says that they have "ripped" a DVD to their computer, what they are describing is the act of making a copy of a DVD in the form of a digital video computer file. The movie contained on the DVD is copied to a file format that can be played by programs like Windows Media Player or iTunes. Put the DVD movie you want to rip to your hard drive in your computer's DVD-ROM drive. The side of the disc that holds the data should be facing down. Close the DVD drive's disc tray.

Open the DVD ripping computer software of your choice. These programs can be legally purchased both online and in electronics stores. Examples of DVD ripping computer programs include iToolSoft's Blu-Ray/DVD Ripper and DVD neXt COPY. See the Resources section of this article for links.

Select your source. No matter which DVD ripping computer program you are using, you are going to have to specify to the program what DVD you are ripping. Click the "Source" drop down menu and select the name of the DVD that is in your computer's DVD drive.

Specify an output file type. In some programs this may be called the "Target." This is the type of file you want your DVD movie ripped into. You can choose to rip your DVD movie into a .AVI file, a .MPEG file, a .MP4 file or any other type of computer video file you require.

Press the "Start" or "Copy" button. The language will be different depending on the program, but the result will be the same. The software will start to make a copy of the video and audio information contained on your DVD video into the computer file type you specified. When the process is complete, the program will stop and you can remove your DVD movie from the drive's disc tray.

Tips & Warnings
Most DVD movies that are commercially available are encoded with copyright protection, making it impossible to legally rip the movie to a computer. This is done to combat the video piracy popular throughout the world. There is no legal way to rip a DVD movie with copy protection.
