How to Replace the Door Handle on a Chevy PU
Trucks and cars get broken into all the time, and many times thieves enter find a way to break in through the door handle. If you have to replace one on a Chevy pickup truck, all it takes is about 30 minutes and a few simple hand tools. Door handles on Chevy pickups are standardized, so these instructions will work on most Chevy pickups.
Things You'll Need
- 1/4-inch ratchet and socket set
- Flathead screwdriver
- Open-end wrench set
- Replacement door handle

Open the door and place the flathead screwdriver in the gap between the door lock surround and the door panel. Pop this panel off with a twist of the screwdriver.

Place the flathead screwdriver between the gap in the interior door handle area and the door panel. Twist the screwdriver and remove the panel.

Unbolt the door panel from the door using the 1/4-inch ratchet and sockets. There is a bolt hidden underneath the armrest and one in the door lock hole.

Unclip the power window controls using the flathead screwdriver. The panel will pop off with a little bit of prying, and then the harnesses can be unclipped using your hands.

Pull off the interior panel located just behind the mirror on the door. This is held in place by clips and can be removed by hand.

Push up on the door panel from the bottom and lift the panel off of the door. The panel is held in place with "L" hooks that just secure it against the steel, so no extra pulling should be required.

Remove the rubber grommet at the top of the door using the flathead screwdriver. This covers up one of the bolts for the door handle.

Unclip the rods that connect the door handle to the latch using your hands. They are secured with colored clips that twist onto the connecting rod, and can be untwisted fairly easily.

Unbolt the door handle through the rubber grommet access hole using the 1/4-inch ratchet and sockets.

Unbolt the other bolts on the handle using an open-end wrench. You'll have to reach up and in to the door to reach these bolts.

Remove the door handle, being careful not to scratch the paint.

Reinstall the new door handle in the reverse order of removal.
