How to Make Baseball Practice Schedules
A good practice schedule is the key to running a successful practice, no matter what sport you are coaching. In baseball, too many coaches put their players at a position and then throw batting practice. While this makes for an easy practice, it doesn't help build the skills needed to be successful at the game. Having a good plan going into practice not only will help teach better baseball, but will help you as a coach.

Using a Practice Schedule Sheet
-
1
Find a good practice schedule sheet. Look for one where you can enter: the date of the practice, the skill(s) you will be focusing on, and coaches' comments. The scheduling sheet should also have separate areas where you can enter the time or length in minutes for each drill. You should also be able to describe each drill, so your assistants can help run them.
-
2
Find three to seven drills that focus on the skills you wish to teach or work on during your practice session. These drills should have specific instructions for how to perform them, as well as what you, as the coach, should look for while each player is performing the drill.

3
Fill in the drills that you wish to do at each practice, along with the time dedicated to each drill. Make sure that your instructions for each drill are specific, so your assistant coaches can help. It is a good idea for you to meet with your assistant coaches prior to practice, so you can go over any questions they may have or specific skills you wish to address.
-
4
Make notes on your practice schedule during practice pertaining to each of the specific drills you use. When practice is over, make sure that you and your assistants discuss the specific drills, and take notes as to their effectiveness and how receptive your players were. These notes will help with future practice schedules.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure your plan covers all the objectives you wish to accomplish in the scheduled practice. File all of your previous practice schedules according to specific skills. That way, if you are looking for hitting drills, you can see which practices were most effective. Make sure that you have enough copies of your practice schedule for all coaches and volunteers.
If you are separating into different stations, make sure each station is supervised by a coach or volunteer. For practices that involve hitting, make sure players carry their bats at the barrel when moving about practice.
