How to Make a Homemade Zebra Mask
Many children enjoy dressing up as their favorite fictional character or animal for parties or Halloween. Unfortunately, the costs of buying a new costume each year for Halloween or an upcoming costume party can quickly add up. If your child has decided he wants to dress up as a zebra, there is no need to spend money on a store-bought zebra mask. Craft-savvy parents working on a budget can create a homemade zebra mask using basic crafting supplies.

- Large white paper plate
- Pencil
- Utility blade
- Black felt or construction paper
- Hot glue gun
- Black crafting pompoms
- Hole puncher
- Black yarn or shoe lace

Decide whether you want to make a mask that covers the entire face or only the top half. If you choose the top-half option, cut a kidney shape out of the middle of white paper plate, making sure it is long enough to cover your face all the way across from one ear to the other. If making a full-sized mask, leave the plate as is.

Place the mask against your child's face to estimate where the eye openings should be located. Mark the two spots with a pencil. Use a utility blade to cut out two almond-shaped eye openings. It might be helpful to first draw the almond shapes on the mask in pencil before beginning to cut.

Cut out strips of black felt or construction paper measuring approximately 1-inch wide and long enough to reach from the top to the bottom edge of the mask. These strips will be the zebra's black stripes. Do not make the edges of the strips perfectly straight. Make them wavy so that they mimic a zebra's undulating stripes. Attach several strips to the top edge of the mask, giving the zebra its mane.

Use a hot glue gun to attach the black strips in a vertical position to the mask. For a more natural appearance, vary how much white space you leave between the stripes.

Glue two black crafting pompoms to center of a full-sized mask or to the center of the bottom edge of a half-sized mask. The pompoms will represent the zebra's nose.

Cut two arc shapes out of black felt or constructions paper. These will be zebra's ears. Attach them to the right and left sides of the top of the mask.

Use a hole puncher to make a hole at the middle of the right and left edges of the mask. Hold the mask against the child's face, lining up the openings with the child's eyes. Thread a black piece of yarn or shoelace through the holes. After achieving a comfortable fit around the child's head, tie each end of the string around the edge of the mask in a double knot.
