How to Donate Used Caps and Gowns

Most high schools and colleges require that students wear a certain color cap and gown in order to participate in graduation exercises. Some schools require students to pay a deposit or purchase the cap and robe, which can be a strain on students and their families. Students who may not be able to afford a cap and gown can be barred from participating in the ceremony because of their lack of academic attire, but donating your old cap and gown can give a student a chance to commemorate his accomplishments without the added expense.

  • Assess the cap and gown you want to donate. Is it in good condition? Is it a specific color that only certain students will be able to wear due to their school rules?

  • Send in your gown for repairs if it has holes or other problems. Don't give a student a gown that needs to be fixed. He has enough to think about while finishing high school or college.

  • Call your local university or high school. For high schools, call the principal first. For colleges and universities, contact Student Affairs and ask for someone in charge of commencement. Tell them about your desire to donate to a student in need and ask if your cap and gown fit their academic attire requirements.

  • If the school approves your cap and gown, place them on a hanger and give them to the school.

  • If your cap and gown cannot be accepted by a school, contact local theater companies. These organizations are always in need of costumes, and a cap and gown can be great for a graduation scene.
