1
Set the ladder against the wall, building or shelf that you intend to climb. The ladder's base should be set out from the wall 1 foot for every 4 feet of height. If you intend to climb onto an elevated surface, the ladder should extend about 3 feet above your destination.
-
2
Secure the ladder at either the top or bottom to be sure it will not fall over. Having a friend or co-worker hold the bottom of the ladder is an easy way to ensure it is secure.

3
Ensure that the rungs of the ladder are free of clutter and are dry. Also dry your shoes before climbing; never climb with wet feet or onto a wet ladder, to help avoid slipping. Dry rungs or shoes with a towel, if necessary.
-
4
Face the ladder when climbing. Keep three points of contact with the ladder at all times; both hands and at least one foot should be touching the ladder constantly while you climb. Do not attempt to climb with objects in your hands.
-
5
Place your feet directly in the center of the rungs as you climb to ensure proper weight distribution. Climb one rung at a time. If you become dizzy or disoriented while on a ladder, do not attempt to climb down. Plant both feet firmly on a rung and wrap your arms around the ladder until the feeling passes.
