How to Delete Trojan Viruses

Trojan viruses often worm their way onto your hard drive by hiding themselves as another program. You think you are installing a useful program, but instead you may be installing a harmful virus. Usually, you cannot just press the delete key on files that you suspect of being Trojans, since the viruses are more resilient than that. You will have to use a program to find and delete the virus for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a program that can help you locate and delete Trojan viruses, such as AVG Antivirus and Malwarebytes (see links in Resources).

    • 2

Click "Download Now" in the program you prefer. A window will appear with the options to "Save As" or "Cancel." Click "Save As."

    • 3

Open the installation file on your computer by right clicking the file after it finishes downloading. Select "Open." The installation file should be in your desktop or default download folder.

    • 4

Select that you agree to the license agreement by clicking in the appropriate circle on the License Agreement. Choose the directory you want for your program and finish the installation process by clicking "Exit" or "Finish" or something similar.

    • 5

Begin the program when you are ready by double clicking the appropriate short cut icon on your desktop or by clicking Start > All Programs. Select your program there to make it begin.

    • 6

Update the scanner. Malwarebytes should do this automatically, but for other programs you will have to click "Update." A status bar should appear showing you the progress of your update. After it is finished, you can continue. This ensures your scanner can locate all the Trojan viruses on your computer.

    • 7

Perform a scan with your software. There will be a button marked "Scan" or "Check for Problems" or something similar. Wait while the program looks for your Trojan viruses. Click the button to remove them once they are found. This should be labeled "Remove" or something similar. This should thoroughly delete the threats from your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try a few different programs to make sure you get all the Trojans, as some programs are better at this than others. Be careful not to allow a scanner to delete one of your other scanners during the threat-checking process though, because many scanners will identify each other as threats accidentally.

  • Try to do regular updates and regular scans of your computer with your antivirus and antispyware software because new Trojans can appear on your hard drive without your knowledge any time.
