How to Type Fast on the Computer
Learning to type fast on your computer keyboard could be the key to helping you get homework assignments done faster, staying afloat in online chats or being more productive at work. It might even land you a job. With the use of some simple techniques--like the proper typing posture, the correct hand placement--supplemented with lots of practice, you can turn up the speed on your typing and kick it into the next gear.

1
Sit in an adjustable chair that allows you to adjust your sitting height to the height of your computer's keyboard. Adjust the chair so that your elbows are about equal to the height of the keyboard. Revolution Health recommends keeping your elbows bent to about a 90-degree angle.
-
2
Sit up straight in your chair, with your feet flat on the floor or a footrest. Slouching takes away from your typing accuracy and can affect muscle memory of learned keystrokes.

-
3
Keep your hands, arms and shoulders relaxed. Keep your elbows close to your sides. Lightly rest your index fingers on the "F" and "J" keys of your keyboard with your thumbs resting on the space bar. Do not rest your palms while typing; allow them to hover. Rest the last three fingers of your left hand on the "A," "S" and "D" keys and the last three of your right hand on the "K," "L" and ";" keys.
-
4
Practice finding the tiny bumps on the "F" and "J" keys of your keyboard without looking at the keys to create a mental reference point for the default placement of your fingers on the keyboard.
-
5
Focus on the text you are typing and not the location of the keys on the keyboard. Looking at the keys will slow your typing speed because your attention is diverted away from what you are typing. It may be slow going at first, but learning to type without referencing the keyboard will keep your focus on the text and help you type faster.
-
6
Practice typing with free online typing games and tests (see link in Resources). Repetition through practice builds muscle memory and allows you to locate the proper keys on your keyboard without having to look at your keyboard.
