How to Install a New Pond Liner Over a Preformed Pond
Preformed ponds are an easy way to get started in water gardening. All you have to do is dig a hole in the shape of the liner, drop it in, fill with water and you're good to go. But sometimes preformed ponds develop leaks---leaks that are just about impossible to repair. But don't despair. You can still enjoy your water landscape by installing a new pond liner over your leaking preformed liner. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Pond liner
- Child's swimming pool
- Bucket
- Water treatment
- Construction sand

Turn off any pumps, waterfalls or any other water circulation features.

Using a bucket, transfer some of the pond water into the child's swimming pool.

Move your pond residents to the child's swimming pool. This includes plants and fish.

Drain the pond using your circulation or waterfall pump.

Clean out any muck or debris from the bottom of the preformed pond.

Pour the building sand into the bottom of the preformed pond. This will give your new pond liner a nice, smooth foundation.

Lay the new liner in the preformed pond. Start at the bottom of the pond and work your way up, carefully smoothing out the liner.

Place a garden hose at the bottom of the pond and slowly begin filling. Keep your eyes on the liner as the pond fills with water. Smooth out any wrinkles or kinks.

Add decholorinator and any type of water treatment. Allow to sit for the specified period.

Turn on circulation pumps, filters and any water features.

Transfer your plants and fish back to their new home.
