Instructions

Be sure you have read, understood and are able to follow the teacher's instructions for the essay. The teacher may require a certain number of pages or paragraphs. Be prepared to meet the teacher's length expectation, but try not to exceed it by too much.

    • 2

Brainstorm and think about what the main idea to the essay will be. Depending on the assignment directions, the essay may require a main idea that gives an opinion or provides the answer to a question that is given in the essay directions.

    • 3

The ideal length and format for most essays is five paragraphs. The first paragraph is the introduction paragraph and presents the main idea for the entire essay.

    • 4

The second, third and fourth paragraphs are the body paragraphs. Each body paragraph provides support or helps prove the main idea presented in the first paragraph.

    • 5

The fifth paragraph is the concluding paragraph. This paragraph restates but also re-enforces the main idea presented in the first paragraph and proved in the three body paragraphs.
