How to Create Crests, Logos & Symbols
Logos, crests and symbols are often used by businesses, schools, clubs and organizations to serve as a unique identifier for their entity. Most people want their identifier to be creative and catchy so it stands out among others. These objects can be created with graphic design software to have that authentic professional look most people desire. There are also online resources for those who are not technologically experienced. So everyone can create crests, logos and symbols to meet their needs.
Instructions

1
Open your graphic design program. Double-click on the program's icon on your computer desktop screen. When the program opens, the drawing board should be blank.
-
2
Set up your document properties. When the graphic design program opens, a document set-up screen will open. You will be prompted to choose the measurements and resolution for your design. The width and length for most logo designs (horizontal crests, logos and symbols) is approximately 4x3. For vertical objects, simply revert the measurements to 3x4.

3
Start your crest, logo or symbol by drawing the object you want to represent the design. Most graphic design programs give you the option of drawing objects with free-hand tools, pen tools or brushes. These tools can be found on the main toolbar for most graphic design programs. Click on the tool icon you desire to use. (If you cannot decipher which tool is which, simply move your mouse over the toolbar icon, and its name will appear.) Drag the tool to the drawing board and click over the board to apply lines, shapes and colors to the design.
-
4
Add the word text for your crest, logo or symbol to include the name for the design. Click on the "Text" icon on your graphic design toolbar. (This icon is usually an image of one large letter to indicate type.) Click over the area where you want to type your word text and drag your mouse to create a box to type your text in.
-
5
Use online resources as a means of creating crests, logos and symbols. If you are inexperienced with graphic design software, or you desire to take a less complicated route, there are applications available where you do not need to download any software. For an example, open the LogoMaker website (see Resources section).
-
6
Create your crests, logos and symbols when LogoMaker opens. Click on the "Design It For Free" link and a design portal will open in a pop-up screen. Choose any industry in which your design will fall. You will then be redirected to a database with links to symbols, letter-based icons and abstract icons to help you create your design. Browse through each set of objects to find one that you like.

Tips & Warnings
Be logical when creating your crests, logo or symbol. Do not use something another business or organization already has in place. Photoshop is used as a graphic software example for crest, logo and symbol designs. This is not the only graphic design program available for this type of creation. Programs such as CorelDRAW and PaintShop Pro are just as efficient (see Resources section). Brushes are highly recommended for creating unique crests, logos and symbols. Graphic design brushes can be found online as free downloads (see Resources section).
If you are creating a crest, logo or symbol for personal use or a small business, make sure you own the business name you are creating the logo for. Non-ownership can cause legal issues later.
