If you're tired of sending store-bought holiday cards to friends and family members, design your own Christmas cards that celebrate the spirit of the season. Use a simple paper-crafting technique and craft supplies to make an eye-catching pop-up card that features a nativity scene. Combine the dimensional accent with a Christmas sentiment to create a card that you can also display on an entryway table or holiday mantel.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blank cards
  • Envelopes
  • Scissors or paper trimmer
  • Ruler and pencil
  • Glue
  • Embellishments
  • Alphabet rubber stamps and ink or marker
  1. Step 1

Choose two contrasting colors for the nativity pop-up card. Go with a traditional red and green, an elegant black and white or a soft beige and sage green.

  2. Step 2

Buy an equal number of blank cards in the two colors you chose. You'll need two blank cards to create one pop-up holiday card. Purchase a set of envelopes that coordinate with the card colors.

  3. Step 3

Decide which color card you'd like to appear on the outside and which will become the inner liner with the pop-up element. Use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut 1/2 inch off the length and width of the card that will serve as the inner liner.

  4. Step 4

Place a ruler along the fold of the card that you're using as the inner liner and mark the center point with a pencil. Position scissors along the fold and cut a 1-inch slit 1/2 inch to the left of the center point and another 1-inch slit 1/2 inch to the right of the center point.

  5. Step 5

Open the card and face the folded side toward you. Press your finger into the center of the fold to push the cut portion in so it becomes a step inside the card. Close the card with the step folded inside. The card should now have an empty notch along the fold. Glue the card with the notch inside one of the cards in the contrasting color.

  6. Step 6

Select a nativity-themed embellishment to pop up inside the card, such as a nativity scene sticker, die cut or clip art image. Open the card with the fold at the top and glue the embellishment to the front of the pop-up mechanism in the center of the card.

  7. Step 7

Adorn the card front with an accent like a holly die cut or star sticker. Use rubber stamps and ink or a marker to add a sentiment across the bottom that reads, "Happy Holidays" or "Oh Holy Night."

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the pop-up embellishment from sticking out of the bottom of the card by ensuring the accent is shorter than the width of the outer card. If you'd rather not feature a nativity scene on your pop-up Christmas cards, use another holiday design such as a Christmas tree, ornament, candy cane or a stocking.
