How to Install a Wireless Modem

A wireless modem is a device that does the jobs of a modem and wireless router in one unit. It sends and receives signals to and from the Internet while at the same time broadcasting those signals, making it possible for any computer in range to connect to the Internet without the use of Ethernet cables and wires. Installing a wireless modem in your computer setup is a simple process, requiring no more than a few minutes of your time.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your wireless modem's power cable into a wall outlet, surge protector or power strip.

    • 2

Connect the wireless modem to the Internet hookup jack in your home via a coaxial cable. One end of the cable screws onto the coaxial wall jack installed by your Internet service provider at the time your service was set up. The other end of the cable plugs into the back of the wireless modem.

Connect the wireless modem to your home's main computer using an Ethernet cable. One end of the Ethernet cable plugs into a port on the back of the modem while the other plugs into the Ethernet network port on the back of the computer.

Set up a new wireless connection. To take advantage of the "wireless" part of the wireless modem, your home's main computer must be set up properly. Open the Control Panel and select "Network and Sharing Center." Next, click "Set Up a New Connection." Click "Connect to the Internet," followed by "Wireless" and then follow the directions on screen to create and name your wireless network. Any computers that are in range will then be able to pick up the signal being broadcast by your wireless modem.

Tips & Warnings

  • A wireless modem is not a modem that can operate completely without wires as the name suggests. It merely is a device that performs the function of a wireless router in addition to a regular modem. You still need to plug the modem into the wall for power, into the Internet coaxial jack for Internet service and into your main computer for network settings. These connections are completely unavoidable.
