How to Make a Silk Sunflower Bouquet

Sunflower bouquets can be used for a unique twist on the traditional wedding bouquet. They are especially popular for summer weddings. Silk sunflower bouquets are more economical and can be made weeks ahead of an event. They will also last for a lifetime, unlike fresh bouquets which must be carefully pressed if you want to preserve them. If you want a silk sunflower bouquet for your wedding, you can easily design simple ones on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick small or mini silk sunflowers. Sunflowers with large heads or long stems will not work well in bouquets. Include four or five sunflowers with diameters of 3 to 5 inches or a dozen or more mini sunflowers with diameters of roughly 2 inches.

    • 2

Get flowers that complement the vibrant yellow of sunflowers. White, cream or pale yellow flowers will ensure that the sunflower is the most vibrant, noticeable flower in the bouquet arrangement. Add baby's breath or similar sprigs to the bouquet to complement the sunflowers without overshadowing them.

    • 3

Insert flowers that match your wedding colors if they are complementary to the color of the sunflowers. Purple, for instance, is a complementary color of yellow. Certain blues can also complement yellow. Add just a few darker colored flowers so that you will not detract attention from the sunflowers.

    • 4

Turn the flowers to face all different directions in the bouquet. Flowers should be facing outward no matter which direction the bouquet is turned. Don't put the flowers too close together. Squeezing too many flowers into the bouquet will produce a crushed appearance and will actually fold the petals of the flowers inward.

    • 5

Bend the stems, petals and leaves with your thumb and forefinger to create slight curves. Slightly arching the stem to bring the petals inward will create a more natural look.

    • 6

Tie the bouquet together with floral wire. The wire has to be twisted tightly to hold the flowers perfectly in place. Hide the floral wire under a ribbon or bow in a neutral color or your wedding colors.
