How to Convert MP3 to Mpx
The Lyra PDP 2201 is an older portable music player developed by RCA and Thompson before the introduction of the well known iPod. The PDP 2201 used a proprietary compression format for music designated *.mpx. This is not to be confused with Microsoft Project Exchange (MPX). Because this is a proprietary format, there are no free converters that do not come with your Lyra PDP 2201. Files once converted to mpx cannot be converted back to mp3, so be sure to keep your original copies.

1
Attach the CF Reader to your personal computer. Typically, you'll do this through a universal serial bus (USB) 1.0 or 2.0 port. If this is your first time using the CF Reader, allow Windows to automatically detect and install the correct driver, which is included in the CF Reader. You will just need to click OK to begin installation.
-
2
Insert a blank CF card into the Reader. After filling the CF card with your newly formatted music, you will be able to place the CF card into your PDP 2201.
-
-
3
Double-click to open the CF Reader Icon that will now be in the lower right corner of your personal computer. It can be identified by a big (L) that is stylized. This opens a window labeled "CF Converter/Reader."
-
4
Select the music (in *.mp3 format) that you wish to convert to mpx, and drag it into the CF Converter/Reader window. That will begin the conversion process that will take several minutes per music file.
-
5
Close the CF Converter/Reader window when the progress bar says finished. This will ensure your mpx files will not become corrupted when you remove the card and reader.

Tips & Warnings
The Lyra PDP 2201 comes with a 32 megabyte CF card which can hold approximately 10 to 15 songs. The CF card can be replaced with generic SD mini cards up to 2 gigabytes, which will allow you to store significantly more songs. To work correctly, the SD mini card must be blank and not formatted. CF cards are available up to 2 gigabytes, but they are prohibitively expensive. They are no longer manufactured, so they're hard to find.
Do not remove the CF disk, CF Reader or any other device during the conversion process or you risk permanently damaging the CF disk. If this happens you will need to acquire a new blank disk.
