How to Light a Hot Water Tank
A hot water heater tank is an important element in any household. You might not realize how important it is until you go to take a shower and realize there is no hot water because your pilot light went out. Lighting a hot water heater tank can be slightly challenging and you might need to repeat the process before the tank is successfully lit. Does this Spark an idea?

Smell around the water tank for gas fumes. Smell around the bottom and close to the floor. Typically, gas settles to the bottom. Do not attempt to light if you smell gas. Wait five minutes to clear out any smell of gas. If you still smell gas, do not proceed with the steps and call your gas supplier.

Turn the gas knob with your hand clockwise to the off position.

Turn the temperature counter-clockwise to the lowest setting.

Remove the outer and inner doors from the water tank.

Locate the pilot light by following the metal pipe from the gas control to the inside of the hot water tank. This should be done visually. Typically, the pilot light is located on the larger metal tube inside the tank. Never put your hand inside the tank.

Turn the gas knob counter-clockwise to "Pilot."

Hold the red button down and light the pilot with your multipurpose lighter. Continue to hold the red button for about 1 minute after the pilot is lit.

Release the red button. The button will pop up and the hot water tank will remain lit. Replace the inner and outer door. Turn your gas cock to the on position and turn your temperature dial to high.

Repeat Steps 2 through 8 if pilot light goes out.

Tips & Warnings
Do not put your hands inside the water tank. Do not use flammable vapors around the vicinity of your tank. Do not use gasoline, propane or paper to lite the pilot light.
