How to Avoid Road Closures Via GPS
To avoid road closures via GPS, you must have a road GPS unit with the capability of receiving real-time traffic information. The most common type of real-time GPS traffic information comes from the FM Traffic Message Channel or MSN Direct Traffic. Regardless of the source of the traffic information or your specific GPS model, avoiding road closures via GPS is relatively standardized and easy to do.

1
Check the traffic icon in the upper left-hand corner of the GPS to verify your GPS is receiving real-time traffic information. In most models, the color of the traffic icon will vary based on the current traffic conditions in your area. Green is normal traffic flow, yellow is moderately congested, and red is severe or stopped traffic. If a road is closed, red is the color that will appear.

2
Select your destination. Most road GPS models automatically will compute the fastest route from your current position to the destination. If your GPS is receiving traffic information, the GPS computer automatically will compute the effect of the traffic delay, and if a better option exists, it will choose a faster route. Temporary road closures are computed as a severe delay and automatically prompt a reroute around the area.

3
Select the traffic icon in the upper left-hand portion of the screen to manually avoid traffic or road closures.
-
4
Touch "Traffic on Route" to view traffic delays on your current routing. Although the GPS is most likely to avoid severe congestion or road closures automatically when initially computing the faster route, it is always a good idea to manually check the route for delays that may have occurred since your route was selected last.

5
Select "Avoid" next to the route segment if that segment of the route appears yellow or red. The GPS automatically will recompute a new route excluding the avoided area.
