Java applets are programs with a tightly defined purpose that run in Internet browsers or other containing programs. Running applets is usually as simple as pointing your browser to a web page that contains them, but sometimes factors may prevent the applet from running. Discover a few steps that will help you run applets.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Navigate your browser to java.com and click on the "Do I have Java?" link. The script on the web page will query your browser for the needed Java plug-in.

  2. Step 2

Return to the java.com start page; then, press the "Free Java Download" button if the message "Congratulations! You have the recommended Java installed" does not appear.

Respond to the prompt asking if you want to install Java. Your computer will automatically download and install the plug-in.

Execute the alternative, offline installer to install Java, if the initial installation attempt produced an error message. Get the offline installer from the "Java Downloads for All Operating Systems" item in "Resources," below.

  3. Step 3

Close your browser and re-start it once the installation completes successfully. Verify that the plug-in is working by surfing to javaboutique.internet.com and clicking on any of the links for applets on that site.

  4. Step 4

Execute applets with the following alternative instructions if your browser does not show any applets executing:

If your current browser is Internet Explorer, select "Tools," click "Manage Add-ons" and choose "Toolbars and Extensions." Select the Java plug-in from Sun Microsystems, and enable it if the Enable button shows at the bottom of the window.

If your browser is Firefox, select "Tools," click "Add-ons, Java Platform" and press the "Enable" button.

  5. Step 5

Change the network settings in the Java control panel if you see only red X's in place of running applets on a web page. Select "Start" and enter "Java" in the text box for entering a program's name. Select the "Java" program.

When the Java Control Panel appears, click the "General" tab, then click the "Network Settings" button. In the window that appears, select the "Use Browser Settings" option.

On the "Advanced" tab, expand the Default Java for Browsers subtree and ensure each check box is checked. Close the Control panel, then close and restart your browser. Load another web page containing a Java applet.
