How to Apply Sealer to a Concrete Driveway

Sealing a concrete driveway ensures that water does not seep into the concrete and damage it. The sealer also will guard against wear and tear caused by your car and various chemical elements, helping your driveway last a long time and saving you money on repairs.

Things You'll Need

• Bleach
• Stiff brush
• Power washer
• Low-pressure sprayer, paint roller or brush
• Paint stirrer

Instructions

1. Prepare the driveway by applying a mixture of one part bleach and three parts water. Use a stiff brush to scrub the driveway clean. Rinse the driveway with a power washer until no more dirt appears. Allow the concrete to dry completely.

2. Mix the concrete sealer gently, using a paint stirrer to blend it completely. Take heed when moving the container of sealer; shaking it or moving it roughly can form air bubbles, which will ruin the application.

3. Use a low-pressure sprayer, paint roller or brush to apply the sealer to the driveway. Coat the entire surface, applying a smooth, thin layer. Do not apply so much sealer that it pools in certain areas.

4. Allow the concrete sealer to dry completely. The drying time will depend on the product you are using. Check the label to find out how long to let it dry.

5. Apply a second coat of the sealer. Allow it to dry completely before you walk or drive on the concrete.
