The Basset Hound originated in France as a canine to track small game while the French followed on foot. This breed dog goes back to the Queen Elizabeth 1800 era.

Colors of the coat of this dog can be any hound hue with black, tan, white, red and others too. Some Basset Hounds have been seen with honey and blue too. The markings seem to add to the desire for dignitaries to select this breed. Napoleon' s reign increased the popularity of this dog breed since he was a pet owner of this dog breed.

Weight ranges between 50 and 65 pounds with a with a height of about 14 inches tall. Because of this dogs heavy body, they should not be left alone to swim since they cannot hold themselves above water very long. The huge paws have a thick pad which allowed them to cover rough terrain in their field work in France.

Grooming for the Basset Hound is minimal, however it sheds a large amount. The sleek, smooth and medium length hair is course under the tail, but otherwise a hard texture is prevalent with much elasticity. This dog likes attention, so will co operate well with the combing and brushing needed to maintain wellness in hair hygiene.

The Basset Hound has a gentle, mild temperament and never has timidness or aggressive traits. This is an extremely devoted dog to pet owners. Children of any age will have a good playmate with this dog.

The lifespan of the Basset Hound dog will be 10 to 12 years of contentment and sharing love with family.
