African American skin can become blotchy and discolored easily, especially if the skin becomes infected with acne. Applying some kinds of acne treatments can cause African American skin to become overly dry and discolored, so knowing which products to use on black or brown skin is important.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Olive oil can be used as a deep cleanser and a moisturizer on the skin. Massaged into the skin, olive oil bonds to the bacteria-infested oils in the pores and effectively pulls it out of the skin.

  2. Step 2

Tea tree oil kills bacteria that lead to acne breakouts, but it doesn't dry out the skin like benzoyl peroxide creams do. Tea tree oil must be diluted with water before use.

  3. Step 3

Baking soda is alkaline and kills off Candida bacteria, one of the contributors to acne. Baking soda can be massaged into the skin to remove pore-clogging dead skin and kill bacteria.

  4. Step 4

Steaming the skin helps the pores become more open, and allows impurities and oils to become flushed out of the skin.

  5. Step 5

Calamine lotion can be used to treat and dry up large cystic acne without irritating or damaging the skin.
