So you've done all your training, and now your 5k race day is upon you. It is time to get ready for your race. Running your first race is a fun and exciting experience. The first time around, it is a good idea to ask a few questions or read a few articles on how races work, so you don't stand out as a newbie racer.

Here are some great tips for race day to get you started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

RACE CHECK-IN. Typically the night before, or the morning of the race you will need to check-in. When you check-in for the race you will receive a packet of information that tells you when the race begins, valuable coupons for race vendors, and possibly a race map. You will also receive your race t-shirt, race number, and a computer chip if your race uses one to track your time.

  2. Step 2

SLEEP WELL. The night before the race, make sure you go to bed at a reasonable time. Try to get as much sleep as possible so you are well rested and ready to run for your race. If you are running and afternoon race, try not to overdo your physical activity in the morning leading up to the race.

  3. Step 3

EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST. Make sure you eat something for breakfast. Eating items with protein like peanut butter toast, whole grain cereal, granola bars, or bananas are good choices. Don't eat too much or you may have an upset stomach when you start running.

  4. Step 4

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER. Check the forecast for the race day. Make sure that you are wearing weather appropriate clothing. You want to be warm enough, but not too warm. Decide on what you are wearing the night before the race. Try to use items that you have worn before. It isn't the best idea to wear new clothing for a race that you have never trained in.

  5. Step 5

PINNING ON YOUR NUMBER. You will receive a race number. Use safety pins to pin the number to your chest. This number identifies you as a racer and will be used to track your race time.

  6. Step 6

ARRIVING AT THE RACE. Make sure you arrive at the race location with enough time to warmup and stretch. There could be a lot of traffic, so leaving early is a good idea to ensure you are ready for your race.

  7. Step 7

LINING UP. If you are planning on running the entire 5k race, make sure you line up at the middle to near front of the pack. Typically participants that walk will be near the end of the race, and the faster racers will be at the very beginning. You never want to be lined up at the end of the race near the walkers. If you do, you will end up weaving in and out of all the walkers when you begin your race, which will slow your race time considerably.

  8. Step 8

START OFF SLOW. No matter what happens, try not to overdo your running in the beginning of the race. If you start off too fast you may not have enough endurance to last the entire length of the race. Along the course markers will appear to let you know when you've gone the first mile, second mile, and third mile. You will be able to decide how you are doing based on these markers.

  9. Step 9

HAVE FUN. Running a race is meant to be a fun and enjoyable time. It is an accomplishment. Try to have fun running your race. Believe me, once you run your first one, you will be hooked!
