Step 1
Find a snorkeling partner or group.
Those who snorkel alone are in far greater danger than those who snorkel with a group. Besides the fact that while alone there is no one to look to for help, dangerous underwater predators (such as sharks) are more likely to attack a lone snorkeler than one who is in a group. -
Step 2
Check for currents and riptides in the place where you will snorkel.
If being swept out to sea is not on your agenda, always check to ensure that the place you are snorkeling is free of riptides and strong currents. -
Step 3
Don’t touch or tease underwater wildlife, plants, or coral while snorkeling.
Safe snorkeling requires a great deal of respect for the wild; there are many seemingly docile animals, plants, and coral that can cause you a great deal of pain or even death. Keep your hands to yourself to avoid injury while snorkeling. -
Step 4
Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
There are many dangers in snorkeling, but being aware of where you are and what’s around you can serve as a form of protection. -
Step 5
Hire a guide.
For the safest snorkeling experience, hire a snorkeling guide. A snorkeling guide will likely know the safe and most beautiful areas to snorkel, and you will have a watchful eye on you for added protection while doing your underwater sightseeing.
