Make More Money During a Recession
Make More Money During a Recession

A recession may be frightening, but you can recession-proof your life. The first step to surviving a recession is to increase your income and create a situation where you can save your money or put your money to work for you. The key to coming out on top of a recession is taking advantage of the economic conditions rather than being a victim. It seems simple enough, but finding ways to increase your income during a recession can be difficult. Following these tips will help increase your earnings and will allow you to more confidently battle the recession.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Odd jobs, crafts, online work at home jobs; whatever you can do to squeeze a few extra dollars out of your day will help in a recession. In an economy where everyone is looking to save money, you can often utilize a skill to provide goods or services that others are seeking at rates that cut out the competition. In a recession, offering to do odd jobs for friends, family or neighbors can be an excellent way to create extra income. Even in a recession, people are still spending money, just more carefully. If you have free time at home after work, there are many opportunities available for online work that can earn you extra money, even in a recession.

  2. Step 2

It’s a sad fact, but a recession causes many people to sell personal items out of desperation. Scouring yards sales and online ads for deals and reselling them is another way to create income during a recession. There are many people willing to sell valuables and electronics at rock-bottom prices to cover immediate financial needs casued by the recession. If you have a moderate amount of expendable cash to use temporarily, this can be a good opportunity. A few words of caution though; buying items for yourself that you do not have an immediate need for will not help your situation. You must commit your money to making more money, not fulfilling personal wants.

  3. Step 3

In a recession, working extra hours may not be an option for everyone, but for those who can, just a few extra hours worked each week will create a significant contribution to your savings or investment account over the course of a year. If you are a salaried worker and not paid for extra hours, then this option is not for you. You should use those hours on another recession-proofing, income-creating venture.

One of the keys to creating income during a recession is to have a sound financial plan. Make sure you know what you’re earning the extra money for so you will be more focused on utilizing it to achieve your goal and keeping the recession away!

Tips & Warnings
  • Create a plan and stick to it!
  • Consult a licensed professional before making investing or other financial decisions.
