This is a quick how to on introducing new fish into an occupied aquarium.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, do research on the new fish you want to purchase. Make sure it is compatible with the fish you already have. Example you don't keep a snake head with a goldfish if you want the goldfish to survive.

  2. Step 2

Then make sure the nitrate cycle is ready for a new fish. You don't want to buy a new fish and have it die due to ammonia or nitrite poisoning, which would probably affect your other fish too.

  3. Step 3

Redecorate. Shift at least 80% of the decor in your tank to get rid of any territory the other fish have. This may seem unfair but it is exactly the opposite. It gives the new fish a chance to find itself a hiding spot while the other fish are looking and rebuilding there territory. Also, do a real good water change, maybe 30-45% to make the water different and new to all the fish.

  4. Step 4

Add the new fish. It is often suggested to put the new fish in quarantine. If you are worried about that then you shouldn't be shopping at that store. Keep an eye on the new fish and make sure he/she isn't being bullied to much. That should be good for this how to, good luck.
