How to Write A Letter Of Recommendation (Reference Letter)

There may come a time where someone may as you to write a letter recommending them for a job, or they may need one to accompany a college application.

Skip writing a letter for someone you really can't recommend. It will be challenging for you to write a letter recommending them.

Sometimes, it's hard to think of a whole page of things to say about a person. Here's how to go about it.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  1. Step 1

    Ask who the letter will be addressed to. If you're writing a letter that may go to several people, "Dear Sir or Madam" will work. Include your name, information and the date.

  2. Step 2

    Your first paragraph should how you know the person (through work, school, etc) you're writing about and how long you've known them. Talk about good personality aspects.

  3. Step 3

    In the second paragraph, talk briefly about a specific situation. It may be an obstacle the person gracefully overcame, or a time they went out of their way for you or someone else. It's nice to have an example to back up all the wonderful things you have just said about the person

  4. Step 4

    The third paragraph should be your recommendation and why you believe the person would be a great addition to the company or school. Personally sign the letter at the bottom.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to write a letter for someone you don't think is fantastic, just keep it neutral. The reader will be able to tell from your tone.
  • Don't say anything negative! You don't want the person to come back and sue you.
